Upgrading Backup CapabilityThe problem Following our successful upgrade of Gowrings’ core systems, we were invited to present our proposal for a new backup solution. This was required because the existing traditional tape backup system could no longer cope with the amount of data to be backed up within the available timeframe. The company was also uneasy about the security of backup tapes held off-site, and wanted to ensure that data backup was included in the disaster recovery plan. In addition, Gowrings wanted the new daily backup routine to be fully automated, with the capability to easily and rapidly restore any required files. Our solution We proposed a new on-site backup solution based on an HP ProLiant DL320s server and Symantec’s Backup Exec Continuous Data Protection and Backup Exec System Recovery, safeguarded by our own off-site back up solution. Implementation We installed a new HP ProLiant DL320s server, giving 1.8TB of initial storage capacity. This, coupled with Symantec’s Backup Exec Continuous Data Protection enables automatic ‘snapshots’ of all servers every two hours and on-line storage of daily backups for 90 days. We also identified the key critical data required to allow Gowrings Mobility to continue functioning in the event of a major company-wide catastrophe, and set-up a daily off-site backup system to automatically capture this highly critical data. Client’s comments “During implementation Micropoint presented as a strong organisation with good leadership, readily available for any issues and teething problems. They have continued to live up to our expectations despite some difficulties in the early days. The support team and our Account Manager kept us fully informed at all times and did whatever it took to ensure we had continuity of service and minimal downtime.” |
